An open-source tool for cyber operations

CyberChef is a simple yet intuitive development software that helps users carry out all manner of operations using a web browser. When you want a convenient program to do your encryption, compression, encoding, and data analysis, this is the tool for you. It is designed to enable both technical and non-technical analysts. This way, you can manipulate data in complex ways without needing to deal with complex tools and algorithms.

A simple tool for complex operations

CyberChef’s point of strength is its user-friendly interface. The majority of the app’s window is dedicated to your workspace. The inbox box n the top right allows you to paste, type, or drag the text file you wanted to operate on. The bottom right, on the other hand, is the output box where you can see the outcome of the processing.

Furthermore, the middle area displays the recipe area. It is where you can drag the operations that you want to use. You can also specify arguments and options in the recipe area. You can use as many operations you want; may it be simple or complex ways.

CyberChef displays all the operations it can do on the left of the screen. You can browse through the list or search for a particular process using the search bar. For added convenience, the app allows you to create your favorites list, which will be displayed on top of the operations. In addition to the operations mentioned above, CyberChef also supports networking, multimedia, forensics, language, and data format processes.

Smart features

Simplicity is perhaps CyberChef’s main arsenal against other development kits. However, the app is more than a simple interface. What users would appreciate the most about the software is the fact that it comes with smart features that increase its usability.

As mentioned, it supports drag-and-drop for both operations and files. Also, aside from automatically producing the output for all your processes, the app comes with automated encoding detection. It automatically detects which encodings your data is under. If the app finds a suitable operation for your data, it displays the icon in the output field.

The app also allows you to set breakpoints on any operation so you can pause execution before running it. And if you come up with an awesome recipe, you can save them and add it to your local storage. More, you can save the output to a file at any time. And since the input box loads a file, you can drop them there and execute another operation. CyberChef’s input box can support around 2GB, depending on your browser.

Handy Swiss army tool

Overall, CyberChef is a handy conversion that is powerful in what it has to offer. It supports a lot of operations and is fully portable, which means you can store them anywhere and run it from any location. Also, it is an HTML page, so it should work on all modern operating systems and browsers. However, while the app is simple to work around, novice developers still need time to familiarize themselves with all the operations included.
